Xanax Overdose Symptoms

April 1, 2018 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

xanax overdose

The active ingredient in Xanax is alprazolam. Specifically, it’s a benzodiazepine. Doctors prescribe it if you have panic attacks or anxiety disorders. However, if you recently dealt with a Xanax overdose, it’s vital to seek help through addiction rehab treatment.

You’re Not Alone in Addiction

The CDC’s National Vital Statistics Report notes that benzos, particularly alprazolam, are contributing to increases in drug overdose deaths. The problem is the fact that the drug acts so quickly. If someone abuses it, an accidental overdose can happen easily. Fortunately, not all overdoses are fatal.

Typical Xanax Overdose Symptoms

Many people accidentally take too much Xanax in one dose. Moreover, they may mix them with another benzodiazepine. Initially, the signs mimic the drug’s side effects. They get tired, can’t concentrate, and begin to panic.

They also develop a headache with confusion. In addition, they have difficulty speaking normally and breathing pattern changes.

One of the most dangerous Xanax overdose symptoms is difficulty breathing. In severe cases, users may experience a seizure. This isn’t something they can ride out at home by themselves. In fact, it’s important to contact first responders right away.

What to Do After a Xanax Overdose

After facing a Xanax overdose, the best option is to seek help in the form of addiction counseling and rehab. For example, at a rehab facility, therapists customize modalities such as:

  • Detoxification
  • Dual diagnosis treatment
  • Clinical care that includes one-on-one talk therapy
  • Group therapy sessions
  • Fitness therapy and nutritional counseling

Treatment lets clients overcome the cravings for the drug. It also provides an alternative to relying on the substance to make life better. Clients recognize the triggers that make them wish for the drug. Next, they find healthy ways of dealing with the situations.

Relapse Prevention Training

A big part of rehab is to prepare for relapse prevention. Clients work with therapists who help develop healthy coping skills. Furthermore, these come into play when guests leave the facility.

Moreover, clients get to practice these coping skills while living at the rehab center. There, they interact with peers daily. During group therapy sessions or experiential therapies, they’ll have plenty of opportunities to apply what they learn.

Treat a recent Xanax overdose as a warning sign. It’s time to make a serious life change. The friendly therapists at Ashley Addiction Treatment want to help. Call 866-313-6310 to schedule an appointment with a counselor.
