Understanding Different Types of Therapy for Addiction

October 11, 2017 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

types of therapy

The best addiction treatment centers use a wide range of therapies. Since there’s no quick fix or instant cure for addiction, a comprehensive approach is often the best route. Explore different types of therapy that can be effective when treating an addiction.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Psychotherapy has proven to be beneficial in treating various mental health disorders, and behavioral therapy is an important branch off of that tree. One of the most effective types of behavioral therapy is dialectical behavioral therapy, or DBT. Licensed and professional therapists use DBT to eliminate some of the roller-coaster emotions that accompany addiction.

DBT also seeks to change the negative thought patterns that lead to addiction. It targets black and white thinking, which often pushes some people from one crisis to the next. Additionally, the therapy helps individuals develop coping mechanisms for stress or strong emotions. DBT can give them the tools they need to find emotional stability, which is key when it comes to relapse prevention.

Holistic Therapies

Clinical and psychological support can go a long way in addiction recovery. However, many individuals can also benefit from holistic therapies. Meditation and mindfulness training, for example, can show people how to focus on the positive.

Massage and acupuncture also contribute to comprehensive wellness. Both can improve circulation and relieve stress, which is a definite advantage during recovery. Activities like yoga therapy can also boost health, increase natural endorphins, and increase overall self-esteem and confidence.

A holistic approach to recovery can also include art and music therapy. These therapies can introduce new skills or help individuals hone old skills that haven’t been developed in a while. Art and music are two excellent hobbies that can become a part of a healthy routine long after rehab has ended.

Group Therapy

Much of addiction therapy takes place in a one-on-one treatment environment. While individual therapy can be very helpful, group therapy also has its benefits. Individuals can boost their communication skills and learn from one another.

The group dynamic means that individuals have to learn to listen and take turns when speaking. They can also realize that they aren’t alone in recovery. While addiction can be isolating, group therapy reveals that many people are going through a similar situation. This can be inspiring, especially if participants have stories about overcoming addiction and finding success in recovery.

Specialized Types of Therapy

At Ashley Addiction Treatment, specialized types of therapy focus on the specific needs of individuals. These therapies work to target some of the underlying causes of addiction. They can also prevent the risks of relapse in the future. Some of the many specialized therapies available to patients are:

  • Pain management therapy
