Why Some Detox Centers Fail

August 15, 2017 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

Detox is a necessary step for anyone who wants to overcome addiction. The detox center you choose will play a big role in your successful recovery. Take a look at why some detox centers fail and what to look for when choosing a detox in the future.

A Lack of Holistic Care

All too often, individuals view detox as an entirely clinical experience. It’s certainly true that patients will need medical care and even prescription medications. However, physical health is not the only component.

Some detox programs fail because they lack a holistic view of recovery. Wellness is about more than just the absence of substance abuse. A truly comprehensive approach will include a focus on psychological and emotional health as well.

A One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Treatment

No two clients entering detox are the same. Each has their own medical history, health concerns, and addiction. That means that no two clients should ever have the exact same treatment plan. When detox facilities force individuals into a narrow definition of recovery, they may not be able to deliver the best results.

Since clients are unique, they deserve unique treatment plans. Some might need more individual, group or family counseling. Others will need to focus more on their mental health. Some individuals may only need a brief detox, while others can struggle with withdrawal symptoms for several weeks.

Insufficient Medical Attention

During detox, withdrawal symptoms are common. Many people will experience mild, flu-like symptoms. However, there’s also the potential for more severe physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms.

Different approaches can make the detox experience more comfortable. Sometimes, clients will require medication to ease them through withdrawal. Others will need emotional support or around-the-clock monitoring. Detox centers that can’t offer top-notch medical care may come up short. It’s important to look for a center that can deliver 24/7 medical support with physicians and nurses on staff.

Attributes of Successful Detox Centers

Now that you know why some detox programs in MD fail, it’s also important to look at why some centers succeed. At Ashley Addiction Treatment, we treat each client as a unique individual. We realize that detox is the first step and not the final result. After detox, there are plenty of programs that can encourage lasting sobriety.

Our addiction treatment campus can offer benefits well beyond a week or two of detox. Once withdrawal is over, the real healing can begin. During your stay at Ashley Treatment Center, you can take advantage of a wide range of treatment methods and therapies. Just a few of these might include:

  • Trauma therapy
  • Dual diagnosis treatment
  • Individual and group therapy
  • 12-step meetings
  • Continuing care for lifelong recovery
