Chronic pain is not just a physical experience; it’s psychological and can impact our emotions as well. At Ashley, we treat our patients with an integrated model, combining mind, body and spiritual health components to contribute to the totality of healing. Pain Recovery is fundamentally different than Pain Management, which is why we focus on recovering from pain, and not managing it. Pain management is traditionally associated with treating chronic pain with opiates. Pain Recovery has a goal to eliminate the use of any addictive substances so people can live a life free from opiates. We use new and different treatments to either completely eradicate pain or minimize pain so that our patient’s functionality is manageable.

The Pain Recovery Program at Ashley focuses on three goals:

  • Reduction of pain. This leads to the manageability of pain without the use of any substances
  • Maximizing functionality and mobility. Getting up and moving, having fun and living.
  • Improving quality of life. Helping you live whole and happy.

The pain program serves the unique needs of people suffering from chronic pain by placing a heavy emphasis on physical healing, providing specific education about chronic pain, and offering a specialized team of nurses, doctors, counselors and fitness instructors.

Physical Component

The predominant component of the pain recovery program comes in the form of physical therapy. Patients attend physical and hydrotherapy off-site 3-4 times a week. The goal is to build strength around the injury or problem area to improve mobility and functionality. Working on physical fitness in the morning allows patients to build endurance and last longer throughout the day to attend group and individual therapy, meetings and other activities. We also offer acupuncture, massage, meditation, yoga, and have a full gym. We encourage our patients to try each of the techniques provided, to create a combination that is suitable for the individual. What works for one might not work for another!

Emotional Component

When patients begin with our program, they are often dealing with feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and have a low self-efficacy. Through individualized and group therapy sessions, we look at underlying psychological concerns such as depression and anxiety and help patients move through their pain experience, changing thought patterns and behaviors to cope with chronic pain. Using techniques such as relaxation, imagery, breathing and yoga can help to relieve anxiety or depression and the impact is has on the body. As patients move through our program, their self-efficacy improves dramatically and shifts to a place of empowerment and hope for a better, more fulfilling life.

The Ashley Pain Recovery Program utilizes a holistic and comprehensive approach to treatment, incorporating non-addictive medications, physical and hydrotherapy, acupuncture, massage, TENS, cognitive behavioral therapy, education, group therapy, yoga, and supervised physical fitness. We empower them to make changes and take necessary steps to move into a place of healing. We focus on giving patients back their functionality, self-identity and help them create meaningful connections again. By putting all of this together and creating a well-rounded continuing care plan, we offer people a new way to approach their pain and a new plan for living a better and happier life.
