Young adults commonly struggle with alcohol and substance abuse. In fact, college student drug use statistics recognize the growing concerns around the country. From marijuana to cocaine and hallucinogens, drug abuse is rapidly on the rise throughout college campuses.
What College Student Drug Use Statistics Are Telling Us
In 2016, the National Institute on Drug Abuse surveyed young adults to develop college student drug use statistics. Moreover, the results were glaring. However, specific drugs were recognized for the most common abuse potential among young adults.
For example, 4.9 percent of college students used marijuana daily in 2016, in comparison to 2.8 percent in 1996. Furthermore, 20.6 percent of non-college, 19-to-22-year-olds were daily users.
Outside of marijuana, many other drugs are at the forefront of college student drug use statistics, including:
- Hallucinogens, such as ecstasy and LSD
Adderall, for example, has become a well-known amphetamine for college students. In fact, 9.9 percent of college students reported use of Adderall in 2016, compared to 6.2% of their non-college peers. Adderall addiction is now a common concern amongst college students.
Alcohol’s Popularity Amongst College Students
Alcohol is frequently recognized as a staple of the college experience in movies, music, and social media. Unfortunately, the numbers tell the story all too well.
Specifically, 32.4 percent of college students noted they had binge drank in the past two weeks. In addition, 40.8 percent of college students reported they had been intoxicated in the past month.
Hallucinogens, Cocaine, and Rave Influence
The club and rave scene has also grown in popularity. In fact, 12.7 percent of college students used ecstasy in their lifetime, according to 2002 data from the Monitoring the Future study.
However, cocaine is also prevalent amongst college students. In 2007, 5.1 percent of college students admitted to cocaine use in the past year.
