Preventing Suicide: Evidence-Based Approaches to Risk Assessment and Intervention

This presentation explores the complex issue of suicide through a clinical and compassionate lens. First, participants will examine how suicide is a public health crisis. Next, emphasis is placed on appraising the impact. People of all ages are afflicted, and Ethnicity / Race is disproportionately affected. Additionally, the effect of fatally harming oneself can create a Prolonged Grief Disorder, or Complicated Grief, in loved ones. The session also aims to enhance our understanding of up-to-date risk factors in the assessment of suicide. Finally, treatment interventions are outlined and assessment tools, brief interventions, and psychotherapies are reviewed.
