What Is Substance Abuse?

August 11, 2017 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

What is substance abuse? Whether you or your loved one are drinking too much, using prescription drugs in an off-label capacity, or taking harsh street drugs, all of these activities fit the definition. Find out how to stop before it’s too late.

What Is Substance Abuse?

If you or someone you love takes prescription drugs to get high, that’s a clear form of substance abuse. When you drink too much alcohol on multiple occasions, that also fits the bill. Abusing street drugs is a surefire sign of a substance abuse problem. In all of these cases, it’s easy for substance abuse to transform into addiction.

Addiction, which experts recognize as a progressive brain illness, has a variety of expressions. It also has a large number of potential treatments. For this reason, rehab professionals work with program participants to customize a plan of care. Because no two individuals are the same, they need an individualized plan tailored toward their situation.

What Is Substance Abuse Treatment?

While there’s currently no cure for addiction, the right addiction treatment services can get it to go into remission. When you learn how to live a sober lifestyle, you won’t have to deal with the symptoms of addiction. In a rehab setting, therapists work with you to find the right recovery tools, which might include:

  • Specialized counseling such as anger management, trauma resolution, and grief recovery
  • In-depth psychological assessments to recognize and treat co-occurring disorders such as schizophrenia or depression
  • Holistic care that embraces the whole person approach, which includes spiritual support and mindfulness training
  • Music and art therapy that offers you vehicles of non-verbal communication
  • Exercise therapy that’s instrumental in changing your mindset from using drugs to looking after your physical health

Of course, you can’t discount the vital importance of professional medical care. Because it’s possible to suffer intense cravings and withdrawal symptoms, medical experts are important members of the team. Their presence makes it easier to focus on recovery and attain long-term sobriety. Since everyone’s needs are different, it makes sense to have a full spectrum of care available.

How Rehab Facilities Assist Clients

Depending on their needs, clients can participate in a number of different substance abuse programs. Examples include:

  • Primary residential care allows you to live at the facility and enjoy all amenities and around-the-clock access to therapists
  • A young adult program works with those between the ages of 18–25, who have different needs than other demographics
  • Relapse program that targets people with an addiction who’ve stumbled but gotten back up
  • Family programs include immediate members to facilitate healing, communication, and a return home
  • An outpatient setting can be the ideal solution for the right individual who can commit to an eight-week program
