What Are Synthetic Drugs

May 21, 2018 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

synthetic drugs

Drug abuse is a problem for people across the nation and of every background. A newer type, known as synthetic drugs, is easy to obtain and falls through the cracks of much legislation. This makes it even more difficult to fight, and more people are becoming victims of this type of “designer drug.” If you or a loved one are dealing with this kind of addiction, read on to discover more about it. You’ll learn about what to look for and how to seek help.

About Synthetic Drugs

The term “synthetic drug” is used to describe a wide array of chemical combinations in products that change and evolve to stay ahead of lawmakers looking to end their production. The common factor among these drugs is that they are man-made and don’t come from a natural or plant source.

There is often no regulation of these substances, and they can be found being sold out in the open at convenience stores and other such locales. The molly drug and methamphetamine technically fall under this category because they are completely chemical-based; however, their means of distribution are usually on the street through dealers. Alternatively, most synthetic drugs are marketed to users as household items like bath salts. This makes them easily accessible and difficult to crack down on by law enforcement.

Types of Synthetic Drugs

Synthetic marijuana is one of the most common types. You may have heard it referred to as “spice.” Another type is bath salts, which are a white or brown powder form of synthetic stimulants. Another variety is fentanyl. It’s a synthetic opioid that is becoming more popular. Dealers often mismarket it as heroin, but it’s far stronger. Synthetic LSD, frequently called Smiles or N-Bomb, produces paranoia and hallucinations in users. Synthetic PCP, sold under the names MXE or Methoxamine, can cause delusions or psychoses in those who use it.

Symptoms of Synthetic Drug Use

Each drug will have its own set of symptoms. Some common signs to watch for include:

  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Self-harm
  • Euphoria
  • Restlessness
  • Sweating
