Stages Of Alcohol Withdrawal [Infographic]

March 27, 2018 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

The stages of alcohol withdrawal vary for each individual. Therefore, some symptoms may arise during your alcohol detox that won’t appear in others. However, one thing is for sure, facing detox alone is an unnecessary risk.

Three Stages of Alcohol Withdrawal

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 88,000 people die each year due to alcohol-related causes. In fact, 5.9 percent of all global deaths are related to alcohol consumption.

However, you have a better chance of overcoming alcohol addiction by understanding the stages of alcohol withdrawal. Specifically, there are usually three stages that begin within hours of stopping consumption and last up to a week through detox.

Stage One of Alcohol Withdrawal

During the first phase, you may experience common signs of withdrawal. For example, these include anxiety, insomnia, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, tremors, depression, foggy thinking, mood swings, and heart palpitations.

These symptoms can arise within the first six to eight hours after you end consumption. However, you may not experience all symptoms at once or at all for that matter. Each individual’s abuse is different. Therefore, your symptoms of withdrawal will depend on your experience and circumstances with addiction.

Stage Two of Alcohol Withdrawal

The second stage of withdrawal involves more critical symptoms. For instance, you may experience signs of an irregular heart rate, mental confusion, sweating, irritability, and mood disturbances. Moreover, your body temperature and blood pressure may increase.

This phase of alcohol withdrawal will surface within the first three days of detox. As you can see, the stages of alcohol withdrawal include a long list of symptoms that require professional supervision for the best chance at a successful detox.

Stage Three of Alcohol Withdrawal

The final stage of alcohol withdrawal is the most severe. Therefore, it also leads many people to begin using again and give up on the detox process. In this case, a professional detox facility is vital to empowering you to continue detox through support and encouragement.

Specifically, the third stage includes hallucinations, fever, seizures, severe confusion, and agitation. These symptoms can arise anywhere from the third day of detox, up to a week. However, without the proper treatment, these symptoms can last several weeks.
