Analyzing Opioid Addiction Statistics and Trends

December 1, 2017 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

opioid addiction statistics

Opioid addiction statistics show many tragic trends. More people use these drugs with each passing year, and far too few get needed treatment. Different age brackets use these drugs than you might expect, too. Sadly, opioids kill more people each year than even car accidents and guns.

Opioid Addiction Statistics Skyrocketing

Very few people with an opioid addiction get the treatment they need. This trend continues after several years of an imbalance between the addiction and much-needed help from substance abuse programs.

According to Blue Cross Blue Shield, the company’s insured members increased opioid addiction statistics by 493%. These opioid addictions include prescribed painkillers like oxycodone and hydrocodone, as well as street-purchased opioids. Through 2010, only 1.4 people for every 1,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield insured members struggled with an opioid addiction. By 2016, that number increased to 8.3 per 1,000 members.

Not Enough Opioid-Addicted People Gain Treatment

The Blue Cross Blue Shield opioid addiction statistics show extreme increases for these dangerous drugs. However, while they show a 65% increase in the number of people gaining treatment for their addictions, that number doesn’t balance with the near 600% increase in opioid addiction.

Also according to a 2016 report by the U.S. Surgeon General, only one in 10 Americans gain the addiction treatment they need. 40% of those who need treatment don’t even seek help.

Other Important Opioid Addiction Statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 33,000 people died because of opioid overdose in 2015. This is more deaths than from guns or car accidents. Overdose deaths from prescription drugs have quadrupled since 1999. Opioid deaths alone jumped 72% from 2014–2015.

Also according to the CDC, females have suffered an increase in overdose deaths by 400% since 1999. For men, the number has only increased by 265%. According to Blue Cross Blue Shield, women aged 45 and over abuse more prescription opioids than men of the same ages. Researchers believe this is due in part to women suffering more chronic pain than men at these ages.
