Heroin Facts [Infographic]

January 29, 2018 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

Heroin abuse and addiction is trending in the wrong direction in the United States. As a result, more and more Americans require rehab treatment to overcome their addiction. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse notes that heroin abuse has risen more than sixfold from 2002 to 2015. Recent estimates suggest that over 5.2 million people used heroin in 2015 alone. These heroin facts give you an insight into the epidemic that continues to devastate lives across the nation.

Understanding United States Heroin Facts

What do these rising figures tell us and how can we make a positive impact moving forward? For starters, younger people are more prone to heroin abuse than anyone else. According to JAMA Psychiatry, those between the ages of 18-29 are more likely to use heroin than older people.

Moreover, heroin overdose has become a major concern as well. In 2015, there were nearly 14,000 heroin overdose deaths, in comparison to 2,000 in 2002. The greatest increases came in the last few years, and this spike has brought about the necessity of specialized addiction care and recovery.

The numbers are staggering, but there is still time to receive the proper treatment you deserve. However, the first step to recovery is recognizing you have a problem that requires help. By doing so, you can begin on a path to recovery that will open you to a future without heroin abuse.
