Drug Overdose Statistics in Maryland [Infographic]

Drug overdose deaths are on the rise in America today. Therefore, it’s important to utilize data to understand the severity of the problem. With drug overdose statistics in Maryland, we can develop treatment and detox plans to help those who are struggling with addiction and substance abuse.

How Major Are Drug Overdose Statistics in Maryland?

Specifically, heroin, fentanyl, and alcohol are the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in Maryland. In fact, 1,212 people died of heroin overdose in Maryland in 2016, according to the Maryland Department of Health.

Moreover, 1,119 people died of fentanyl overdose in the same year. This is a huge jump from 340 deaths in 2015. As you can see, drug overdose statistics in Maryland are rapidly becoming a major concern across the state.

Alcohol overdose, for example, is also leading to devastating statistics. Through 2015-16, there were a reported 891 alcohol overdose deaths in Maryland.

Cocaine and Opioid Overdose On the Rise in Maryland

Outside of heroin, fentanyl, and alcohol, other various drugs are becoming a concern in Maryland. In fact, cocaine and prescription opioids have led to many overdose deaths over the years. Specifically, the Maryland Department of Health report notes that 464 people died due to cocaine overdose in 2016. Furthermore, this is double the number from 2015.

Opioids, however, account for 418 overdose deaths in 2016 alone in Maryland. Moreover, opioid overdose deaths have remained over 300 per year since 2010.
