Alcohol Detox Timeline

May 7, 2018 by Ashley Addiction Treatment

Understanding the alcohol detox timeline

Those who are considering professional treatment for alcohol abuse may wonder about the detox process. Although the experience can vary a bit for each person, there is a basic alcohol detox timeline that can let you know what to expect. The information below will cover this timeline in more detail.

Seeking Help for Alcohol Abuse

The process of detoxing in an effort to recover from alcohol addiction can seem daunting to many people. However, this is an essential step in the recovery process. Knowing what to expect before entering into the process makes taking the leap a lot easier. Treatment centers have the tools necessary to make the entire process as comfortable as possible.

What to Expect: The Alcohol Detox Timeline

There are three general stages to the detox process with alcohol. Each stage will present its own unique challenges. These are outlined in more detail below:

Stage One

Starting about eight hours after the last drink, stage one will begin with minor discomforts. During this stage, a person is likely to experience stomach cramps, insomnia, and mild nausea.

Stage Two

Stage two of the detox process is often accompanied by a worsening of stage one’s discomforts. In addition to these issues, the person may also experience an increased body temperature, heart rate, and breathing pattern.

Stage Three

Stage three of the detox process often presents with severe agitation, hallucinations, and seizures in some cases. These symptoms can be the most troubling to those going through the rehabilitation process.

While the thought of going through the discomforts associated with these three stages can seem scary, the process can be made manageable with the support and tools that a rehab center can provide. In addition to helping you cope with the immediate process of detox, a professional rehab center can also help you design a relapse prevention program. This can set you up for a greater level of success once you leave the rehab center.

Finding the Most Suitable Rehab Center

Many types of innovative substance abuse services exist. It may be confusing to select the right type of program for your needs. It can be helpful to detail the points that are most pressing to you. Go over these factors with the treatment center you’re considering. They can make sure that their services meet your most important concerns and needs.

Some people benefit greatly from treatment centers that place importance on holistic measures of care. Holistic protocols cater to all aspects of your well-being, ensuring that you feel more satisfied with your treatment outcome.
